"Malayland" by Dina Zaman

We are very pleased to announce the publication of our third book, Malayland, by Dina Zaman.

A co-publication by Faction Press and Ethos Books, in collaboration with Sivagurunathan & Chua Literary Agency, Malayland is the personal and sociological reflection of a Malaysian on what it means to be Malay and Muslim in the 21st century.

Nearly two decades after the release of I Am Muslim, Dina Zaman examines questions of identity, belonging, and the socio-political forces shaping Malaysia today. An exploration of the frustrations and hopes of ethnic Malays navigating a rapidly changing world, Malayland looks into developments spanning the 1998 Reformasi movement to today’s digital activism, and charts the undercurrents of a country fighting for a desired identity.

Advance Praise for Malayland

"A must-read book offering a unique perspective on the unseen dynamics of Malaysian life."

Dr. Noor Huda Ismail

"Dina Zaman’s work raises urgent questions about the direction of Malaysia’s reforms, particularly how progressive values can coexist with conservative religious currents."

Amina Rasul-Bernardo

"Caught between worlds, Dina — ever the curious outsider — wrestles with identity and belonging … This is a deeply personal work, a frank and unflinching interrogation of stereotypical framing."

Dr. Greg Barton
